Welcome from Our Chairman

The Department of Psychiatry at The University of Iowa is committed to excellence in teaching. Our faculty includes some of the world's most distinguished investigators who provide residents with cutting edge information about the cause and treatment of psychiatric disorders. In fact, members of our faculty have conducted many of the studies that have led to our newest information about major mental illness. Resident physicians have an opportunity to learn and ask questions of leaders in the fields of schizophrenia, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and genetic disorders to name a few. Our residents consistently give our teaching faculty high marks for providing them with information that is relevant to patient care and that stimulates them to do further reading on their own.

Our commitment to teaching involves informal as well as formal educational settings. An atmosphere of informality within the department encourages interaction between residents and faculty. Faculty members are approachable and readily available for advice, consultations, and research collaborations. Some of our residents publish the results of research projects or literature reviews under the supervision of a faculty member, an activity that provides another valuable educational experience.

Our goal is to provide residents with a broad-based education in psychiatry that will prepare them for life-long careers of self-education and dedication to the practice of psychiatry at the forefront of evolving knowledge. We seek to provide residents with a variety of educational experiences so that they may choose among the many career options that are available in psychiatry. Our residents consistently score high on national examinations and frequently receive national awards. The success of former residents in both practice and academic settings attests to their quality and to the effectiveness of our training program.
