Dear friends and colleagues,
I am proud to present the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Annual Report for fiscal year 2005-06, which celebrates exciting new advances in care, service, and outcomes for our patients and families, significant achievements by our organization, and prestigious honors for our faculty and staff.
It was a year that brought to life our strategic plan for the years 2006 through 2010. This plan—called The Iowa Difference—makes patient- and family-centered care a priority for all of our physicians and staff, every day, for every patient and in every interaction.
By identifying three areas of focus—care, service, and outcomes—the plan embraces the full circle of excellence that defines our special role as Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center.
I am happy to report that much progress is already being made toward accomplishing our goals. A few examples from the past year include:
- Innovative care advances such as Iowa's first 4-D (four dimensional) radiation treatment technology for patients with cancer; Iowa's first kidney artery stent placements using a new "filter" device; and pediatric robotic surgery benefiting the world's youngest person, a one-day-old baby
- An extraordinary spirit of service shown by our faculty, staff, and volunteers through their generous support of community organizations such as United Way and in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the Iowa City tornado
- Exceptional outcomes as evidenced by our outstanding survival rates for tiny babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as measured by the Vermont Oxford Network; and our Rapid Response Team being named a state and national Mentor Institution for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement 100,000 Lives campaign
In the following pages, you will learn even more about how our faculty, staff, and volunteers are helping The Iowa Difference come alive each and every day.
On behalf of everyone at UI Hospitals and Clinics, thank you for supporting our commitment to providing the very best health care to all our patients and their families.
