2006-2007 Annual Report

A Brighter, Cheerier Area For Kids

Even at the tender age of four, Conner Lauterbach knows the difference between a happy-looking area and one that needs a little sprucing up.

That's why Conner actually enjoys his periodic visits to University of Iowa Children's Hospital, according to his mother, Melissa.

"If you have to be there, the renovations to the pediatric inpatient unit are a big improvement," she says. "It's quieter, brighter, there's a nice play area, and every room has a Play Station. Conner definitely notices the difference!"

Conner has spent 27 total months in the hospital since being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in January 2005. He and his family make the 90-mile journey when dangerous fevers mandate round-the-clock observation for a few days.

"It's a great place to be if you need the kind of care that Conner needs," Melissa says.

Children come first

The renovated pediatric inpatient unit re-opened April 17, 2007. Features include:

  • 21 private single rooms and five double rooms
  • Three isolation rooms to prevent the spread of contagious disease
  • New patient entertainment technology
  • Ethernet access
  • Cordless telephones with voice mail
  • Playroom
  • Family lounge
  • Consult room
  • Family laundry room
  • Enhanced patient security
