July 2006
  • Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong joins Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center officials at a public hearing on the UI campus to urge more support for cancer research.
  • For the 17th year, U.S.News & World Report ranks UI Hospitals and Clinics one of "America's Best Hospitals"; six specialties make the top 50 in their respective categories.
  • Janet Fairley, MD, an expert in psoriasis, clinical immunology, tumors, and autoimmune and allergic diseases, is named head of the Department of Dermatology.

August 2006

  • 188 University of Iowa physicians are selected for inclusion in "Best Doctors in America," a Web-based database that links consumers with expert medical care.
  • The newly dedicated UI Nursing Clinical Education Center opens on a round-the-clock basis to meet the learning needs of professional nursing staff and students.
  • Burn Treatment Center earns re-verification for adult and pediatric burn care from the American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.

September 2006

  • An international association based at UI is officially named after Ignacio Ponseti, MD, a pioneer in treating children born with the crippling deformity called clubfoot.
  • UI Neurosciences sponsors the Eastern Iowa "Memory Walk," which raises funds to support ongoing research and support programs that benefit people with Alzheimer's.
  • UI Hospitals and Clinics wins the 2006 Edge of Excellence Award for Community Service, given by The Edge Business Journal.

October 2006

  • Douglas Merrill, MD, becomes medical director of Ambulatory Surgery Center and assistant hospital director—ambulatory surgery.
  • UI Hospitals and Clinics and its Burn Treatment Center host a Midwest conference that highlights the importance of specialized burn centers to national health and security.
  • Richard Smith, MD, elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies; Kirk Fridrich, DDS, presides over the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

November 2006

  • UI Hospitals and Clinics contributes to an NIH study which finds that low-intensity laser treatment does not prevent vision loss caused by early age-related macular degeneration.
  • Several teen-agers who had been patients at UI Children's Hospital share their personal stories and observations to help teach first-year UI medical students important lessons.
  • Experts with the Center for Disabilities and Development at UI Children's Hospital offer holiday gift suggestions for children with special needs.

December 2006

  • Event chair Donna Katen-Bahensky helps raise a record amount of funding support for the popular "Go Red for Women" event, which raises public awareness about women's heart disease.
  • UI dermatologists begin offering "blue-light" therapy to help ward off skin cancer in patients with actinic keratoses—scaly bumps on the face, ears, head, lips, hands, and forearms.
  • Hospital physicians and staff receive immunizations against the three strains of influenza confirmed in Iowa.

January 2007

  • Child magazine ranks UI Children's Hospital 20th in a survey of best children's hospitals in the U.S.
  • Heidi Nobiling, senior associate director in the Department of Nursing Services and Patient Care, is named interim chief nursing officer for UI Hospitals and Clinics.
  • Jean Robillard, MD, dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine, is appointed vice president for medical affairs for University of Iowa Health Care.

February 2007

  • The graduate medical education program for resident physicians is reaccredited for five years by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
  • Stroke Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics earns a Gold Seal of ApprovalTM as a Primary Stroke Center from The Joint Commission.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at UI Children's Hospital is designated a member of United Resource Network's "Neonatal Centers of Excellence."

March 2007

  • New Ambulatory Surgery Center opens to provide expert care combined with advanced technologies for elective same-day or outpatient surgical procedures.
  • "100 Great Iowa Nurses" list includes Gail Crowe, RN: Barbara Hannon, RN: Beverly Herman, RN: Vicki Kraus, RN; Gayle Nelson, RN: Susan Olson, RN: Alison Pauley, RN: Margaret Raab, RN: Traci Stewart, RN: Rich Young, RN.
  • Members of SEIU, Local 199, and AFSCME approve contracts for 2007-09, pending approval by Board of Regents, State of Iowa.

April 2007

  • UI neurologist Harold Adams, MD, leads a national effort that updates the guidelines for how doctors and other caregivers should provide treatment to patients affected by stroke.
  • Based on survey responses and other factors, Children's Hospital of Iowa officially changes its name to University of Iowa Children's Hospital.
  • Smoking is banned within the University of Iowa health sciences campus as an expansion of an earlier smoking ban by UI Hospitals and Clinics.

May 2007

  • Family members and friends of adult patients are now able to share private health updates, photos, and messages through
  • CarePages, previously available to pediatric patients as a free service for sharing private health updates, photos, and messages, is extended to the adult patient population as well.
  • Men's Health magazine names gastroenterologist David Elliott, MD, and neurologist Harold Adams, MD, among the Top Doctors for men in their respective specialties.
  • Board of Regents, State of Iowa, approves planning for an Institute of Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation.

June 2007

  • Alan Reed, MD, former director of liver transplantation at the University of Florida, will direct the Organ Transplant Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics starting Sept. 15.
  • Ken L. Fisher is appointed Associate Vice President for Finance with UI Health Care and Chief Financial Officer with UI Hospitals and Clinics, effective June 19.
  • Ann Broderick, MD, a board certified physician in hospice and palliative care, is named Medical Director of the Palliative Care Program at UI Hospitals and Clinics.
