2003-2004 Annual Report: Pursuing excellence
Bring in the clowns!
Laughter makes good medicine. That's the idea behind the newly organized "Caring Clown" program at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Adult cancer patients and families are being treated to rib-tickling visits by four specially trained volunteer clowns Lille, Hap-Hap-Happy, Professor Grammy, and Nurse Harriet Goodheart. "Laughter can be therapeutic," Nurse Goodheart says. "It circulates the blood and moves the muscles. A little humor can promote faster healing and make patients feel better in their minds." |
