U.S.News & World Report ranks University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics among "America's Best Hospitals"; ten specialties rank among the nation's top 50

As part of an effort to improve safety, the Burn Treatment Center joins a nationwide effort to collect data about serious clothing-related burns to children

A 49-year-old Illinois man becomes the 2,500th patient to receive a kidney transplant at UI Hospitals and Clinics, a milestone for a program launched in 1969

Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UI becomes the first center in Iowa to offer MammoSite Radiation Therapy®, which delivers radiation directly to the tissue surrounding a breast tumor, minimizing radiation exposure

Eric Dickson, M.D., head of emergency medicine research at University of Massachusetts, recruited to direct Emergency Medicine at UI Hospitals and Clinics

Specialists at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at UI help conduct a nationwide clinical trial of lung cancer screening methods to test their potential for detecting the disease in its early stages and for improving survival

UI Heart Care surgeon Jeffrey Everett, M.D., performs Iowa's first mitral valve repair using the da Vinci® robotic surgical system, which improves patient recovery time

Kevin Campbell, Ph.D., and E. Peter Greenberg, Ph.D., elected to membership in the nation's most distinguished scientific organization, the National Academy of Sciences

The first class of physicians in Iowa's only residency training program in emergency medicine begins its studies in the hospital's Emergency Treatment Center
