University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics employs more than 7,600 faculty and staff, including more than 760 staff physicians and dentists; 480 resident physicians and dentists; 180 fellow physicians; 1,565 nurses; and 4,640 other professional and support staff.

Our internationally recognized physicians are members of University of Iowa Physicians, the state's largest multi-specialty medical and surgical physician's group. More than 180 of our physicians are listed on the Best Doctors in America® database, and the hospital is consistently ranked among America's best by U.S.News & World Report.

Our nursing professionals represent a range of expertise, from staff nurses and advanced nurse practitioners to unit-based clinical experts and nurse researchers. Together, they helped UI Hospitals and Clinics become the state's first hospital to receive the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

The hospital also employs a full contingent of other professionals, including therapists, technologists, technicians, social workers, counselors, dietitians, and pharmacists, supported by secretarial and clerical staff and maintenance and environmental services specialists.

In addition, more than 1,300 volunteers logged almost 90,000 volunteer hours.

As a team, our health care providers have brought many medical “firsts” and “onlys” to Iowa, including the first use of robotic surgery to repair heart valves and the first to use a new technique to correct a child's abnormal heartbeat.

Services
During the past fiscal year, UI Hospitals and Clinics had more than 27,000 acute patient admissions, along with more than 740,000 clinic visits to the hospital and to multiple clinical outreach and UI Family Care locations throughout Iowa.

More than 200 health care specialties are available. Our patient care is provided by multidisciplinary teams of specialists who determine the best course of treatment for each patient and is provided in a patient- and family-friendly environment.

Each of the hospital's programs and services plays a special role. And our facilities include a world-class image-guided radiation therapy center; advanced new ambulatory surgery center; maternity center; medical, surgical, and cardiovascular intensive care units; and, in 2008, an expanded and enhanced emergency treatment center.
