The difference between being a good academic medical center and a great one depends on private philanthropic support of the institution. UI Health Care facilities and programs carry the names of some of Iowa’s most prominent and public-minded families: the Carver College of Medicine, the Pomerantz Family Pavilion, the Sahai Medical Education Center, the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, and others.
Others have chosen to support the academic medical center by funding named chairs and professorships for faculty, endowing scholarships for students, and supporting a wide range of programs with targeted philanthropic gifts.
The University of Iowa’s position as one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers would simply not have been possible without private support.
As the American health care system undergoes enormous change and as public higher education faces its own significant funding challenges, private support for The University of Iowa will play an even more important role in achieving institutional greatness in the years ahead. |
