Associate Vice President and Chief Executive Officer

Kenneth P. Kates, M.B.A., was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Associate Vice President of UI Health Care in July 2009. As the executive leader of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Kates is responsible for planning and directing current operations, future growth, and program development of the 708-bed regional referral center.
In addition, as Associate Vice President, Kates works closely with the Vice President for Medical Affairs and other senior team members to accomplish UI Health Care’s mission of providing patient care, conducting biomedical research, and training the next generation of health professionals.
Kates graduated from Philadelphia University, Philadelphia, with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration/marketing, and an MBA in health administration from Temple University’s Graduate School of Business, Philadelphia.
He has more than 30 years of experience in academic health care, including the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System where he served as Vice President of Physician Services, Director of the University of Chicago Children’s Hospital, and most recently as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Hospitals and Health System. He also held positions at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Kates serves on the Member Board of Directors of the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) and maintains an academic appointment in the College of Public Health, University of Iowa.
