In addition to treatment, UI Asthma Services physicians pursue research to learn more about the disease and to develop improved treatments.

Asthma is a chronic or relapsing disease that affects the airways of the lungs. The airways become inflamed, causing them to narrow and make breathing more difficult. People with asthma have an increased sensitivity to certain triggers in the environment. Asthma can be life threatening if not properly managed and controlled.

Asthma affects more than 200,000 Iowans, including more than 40,000 children under age 18. Over time, costs associated with asthma in Iowa total more than $110 million.
