The individualized care of the University of Iowa Children's Hospital pediatric asthma program, combined with patient and family education, virtually eliminates asthma symptoms and the need for urgent care and hospitalization.
University of Iowa Children's Hospital asthma specialists use a multi-disciplinary team to evaluate and treat asthma in children. Our family-centered care approach involves educating the family, helping them understand asthma and its treatment. We work with young patients and their families in understanding self-management of asthma, and provide advice on environmental assessments and modifications.
In addition to treatment, University of Iowa Children's Hospital asthma specialist pursue research to learn more about the disease and to develop improved treatments.
Using the program, patients find:
- No need for unscheduled medical care and hospitalization
- Absence of interference with sleep
- Ability to tolerate normal activity including PE at school and athletics
- Rescue medication only minimally needed
- Use of the least maintenance medication that provides this level of control
Since there are frequently associated problems including allergic rhinitis and eczema, we also offer expert care for those problems.
