Welcome
As the only verified center in Iowa, the UI Burn Treatment Center serves as a midwest referral site for the care of children and adults facing a host of burn and trauma-related injuries.
One of only 40 to 45 burn centers in the United States that is officially verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons, the UI Burn Treatment Center includes a 16-bed critical and intermediate care inpatient unit plus related emergency, outpatient care, and rehabilitation. The center treats more than 800 burn and trauma patients each year.
These acutely ill patients may be facing electrical, chemical, thermal, scalding, frostbite, or inhalation injuries, as well as acute or chronic wound infections. The center’s staff applies skill and compassion, aided by specialized monitoring and bathing equipment and a hydrotherapy facility.
The unit also serves trauma patients, general surgery patients, and patients requiring monitoring or intensive care observation, in addition to cardiovascular patients requiring thrombolytic (blood clot) therapy.
