About us

The Burn Treatment Center is a critical and intermediate care, 16-bed unit, providing care for pediatric and adult patients with electrical, chemical, thermal, scalding, frostbite, and inhalation injuries.

There are approximately 60 burn centers in the United States officially verified by the American Burn Association and the American College of Surgeons, and the UI Burn Treatment Center is the only one in the state of Iowa. More than 800 burn and trauma patients received care in the Burn Treatment Center at UI Hospitals and Clinics last year.

The Burn Treatment Center staff is skilled in the care of acutely ill patients, using old-fashioned personal care and up-to-the-minute specialized monitoring and bathing equipment and a hydrotherapy facility

Burn patients are cared for from an acute stage of injury to discharge and rehabilitation at the Burn Treatment Center. Other patient populations include: trauma patients, general surgery, patients requiring monitoring or intensive care observation, cardiovascular patients requiring thrombolytic therapy, and wound management patients.

A playroom is available for Burn Treatment Center pediatric patients.
