The care team
The Burn Treatment Center staff works together to provide
continuous and comprehensive patient care. Specialized
training and experience is available through health care
professionals in caring for the physical and emotional
aspects of care for patients and their families.
Physicians
The attending staff physician has primary responsibility
for your care. Staff physicians, residents, a physician
assistant, and other consulting physicians are responsible
for coordinating the care provided.
Burn staff physicians:
Nurses
Nursing care in the Burn Treatment Center is provided 24
hours a day by nurses with specialized education and
expertise in the care of critically ill patients. They
perform daily dressing changes, assist the patient with
daily cares, monitor physical changes, provide emotional
support, and complete patient teaching.
Physical
therapists and occupational therapists
These therapists carry out exercise programs with
patients to increase physical abilities. Physical therapy
and occupational therapy activities decrease complications
such as scarring and joint contractions.
Social
workers
A social worker; meets with patients and families to
discuss the emotional stress associated with your illness.
The social worker also helps patients and families locate
necessary community resources, plan for their return home
and to work, and how to apply for appropriate financial
programs.
Dietitians
A registered dietitian assesses each patient's
nutritional needs and recommends an appropriate diet plan.
The dietitian also instructs patients and families about
nutritional needs during the rehabilitation phase of burn
injuries.
Child
Life Therapists
A child life therapist works with children to promote
normal child development during hospitalization. The child
life therapist recommends activities for children and
discusses children's reactions to hospitalization with
parents.
Other professionals
Other hospital professionals available to patients in the
Burn Treatment Center include chaplains,
psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, pharmacists,
psychologists, and patient
representatives.
