After the stem cells have been infused, it takes approximately 10 to 16 days for your new healthy marrow to begin showing evidence of growth by increasing your white blood count. You may feel you have gone through a rough period—receiving chemotherapy and radiation—and expectations for improvement post-transplant are high.
However, the first few post-transplant weeks may be a time when some patients have fevers or side effects from the chemotherapy such as nausea, diarrhea, or a sore mouth. Some patients do not have these reactions.
It is important to remember that everyone who undergoes stem cell transplantation is unique and reacts differently. You will be closely monitored during the weeks following transplant. You will have many blood tests (to follow blood counts) and your nutritional status and all of your organ systems will be closely monitored. You may also need to have other types of tests, such as x-rays, in order to evaluate any problems that may arise.
