The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Oncology
Registry is committed to collecting and providing
information on all cancer patients diagnosed and/or treated
at UI Hospitals and Clinics. This information includes life-long follow-up.
There are 60 complete years of data and 125,000+ cases for
medical staff to analyze and utilize to enhance and improve
patient care.
Follow-up rates on registry cases continue to exceed the
American College of Surgeons (ACOS) standard of 90%. Most
recent calculations reveal a 97.7% success rate on all cases
living and dead. The success rate on living patients is
88.5%. This exceeds the ACOS standard of 80%.
Patient care evaluation studies utilizing registry data
were initiated by the ACOS. The Oncology Registry
participated in these studies that focused on colorectal
cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 1997, and prostate and
stage 0 and I breast cancer in 1998. The results of these
studies are reported to the Clinical Cancer Center
Operations Committee for evaluation. The studies are
submitted to the ACOS Commission on Cancer.
The Oncology Registry submits data to two national cancer
data bases; National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Surveillance,
Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) data base and the
American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer's
National Cancer Data Base (NCDB). Data is submitted to NCI
through the State Health Registry of Iowa (SHRI). Iowa State
law requires reporting of cancer to the SHRI. The ACOS
requires that all "cancer approved programs" submit their
data to the NCDB.
The Oncology Registry expanded data collection in 1998 to
include more specific information regarding surgeries. This
new information is submitted to the NCDB and the NCI.
* Excludes squamous and basal cell carcinoma of the skin,
benign/borderline cases and consults.
** Analytic cases are those cases diagnosed at UI Hospitals and Clinics
and/or seen at UI Hospitals and Clinics for all or part of the first course
treatment.
