2007 Oncology Registry Report
Brain and Central Nervous System Cancers


For the 2006 calendar year – the most prevalent primary cancer site at UIHC was malignant and benign brain and CNS (central nervous system) tumors.  These tumors account for 10.4% of the UI Hospitals and Clinics total analytic cases accessioned this past year.  Divided by sex, 54% of the brain/CNS is male and 46% female.

According to American Cancer Society 2006 surveillance research there are an estimated 160 cancer deaths in the state of Iowa in 2006 for brain/CNS tumors.  Estimated new brain/CNS tumors for 2006, by sex are male 10,730 and female 8,090.

UI Hospitals and Clinics demonstrates similar percentages of brain/CNS tumors, by sex.  While brain/CNS tumors account for only 1.3% of the overall estimated new cancer cases in the United States, the UI Hospitals and Clinics figures for brain/CNS tumors represent 10.4% of our overall annual incidence of new cancer cases.
