2007 Oncology Registry Report
Comments from the Cancer Liaison

Hisakazu Hoshi, MD
Cancer Liaison

As a newly appointed Cancer Liaison Physician to the UI Hospitals and Clinics Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, I am pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with the Oncology Registry in collaboration with the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC).

The ACoS designs quality measure studies, allowing facilities to assess data completeness for specific cancer sites/patients as recorded in each cancer program’s registry for accepted clinical diagnostic and treatment measures as well as comparison against regional and national statistics.

We have reviewed our e-QuIP (Electronic Quality Improvement Packets) breast 2005 updates with compliance rates of 95-100%. Findings from the colorectal study identified less than 5 cases that required attention. Both studies were reviewed and evaluated by the Cancer Committee.

The Registry works diligently to obtain first course treatment information which helps us in our effort for cancer control. With such dedicated staff in the Registry, we had very few cases needing treatment followup effort.

As an NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Program we continually strive for excellence and to provide the highest quality cancer care for the patients we serve.

We currently have 3-year approval (highest) with commendations from the ACoS. Our most recent survey was November 16th, 2007 with a favorable outcome.  The on-site ACoS/CoC survey evaluates each accredited cancer program through a set of national standards designed to assess cancer program quality, function and ability to provide multidisciplinary cancer care for the patients it serves.

As an assistant professor of division of surgical oncology and an institutional cancer committee member, I would like to work with ACoS/CoC to promote better clinical service for the cancer patients and advanced basic/clinical research at our institution.
