Bone Cancer and Cancer of the
Musculoskeletal System

The Orthopaedic (Musculoskeletal) Oncology Program offers a full range of diagnostic and treatment procedures for patients with cancer of bones, joints, muscles, and the other musculoskeletal soft tissues. In addition, the division provides immediate reconstruction of the skeletal system following treatment of cancers, and through rehabilitation, helps patients recover optimal function.

When patients have cancer of the bone or musculoskeletal soft tissue, or they are concerned about possible cancer of the musculoskeletal system, they may be referred to the Division of Orthopaedic Oncology. Upon referral, an initial visit is arranged and an evaluation plan is developed and designed for each patient. Following evaluation, a detailed treatment plan is discussed with the patient and a final recommendation is made after a review of all the tests and findings. Prior to treatment, a detailed plan is also developed to insure the most efficient and effective rehabilitation of the patient following treatment of cancer.

Services
The division provides the full spectrum of musculoskeletal oncologic surgery including bone and joint grafts and custom made prosthetic joints. Radiation therapy with a complete range of chemotherapy is provided for patients with musculoskeletal malignancies. In many cases, after careful evaluation, it is possible to provide effective cancer therapy and preserve limb function.
