In Iowa, Breast Cancer is the number one diagnosed cancer in women. In 2007, there will be an estimated 2,000 new diagnoses and 410 deaths from Breast Cancer in our state. There is hope, Breast Cancer dropped from the number one cancer related death in women to number two. And the five year survival rate for localized Breast Cancer has increased from 72 percent in the 1940s to 97 percent today because of earlier detection and better treatments.
In recent years, we've gained knowledge that will be critical in finding better tools to help diagnose and treat the disease. Drugs that prevent Breast Cancer, treatments without mastectomies, digital mammograms with sharper images, and genetic testing are either here today or show promise for the future.
Utilizing cutting edge treatments, like MammoSite radiation therapy, and participating in national prevention and early detection trials, such as the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR) and the digital mammography imaging study (DMIST), the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is actively searching for ways to prevent Breast Cancer, detect it in its earliest stages, and eventually find a cure. We are truly "Changing Medicine. Changing Lives," for Breast Cancer patients in Iowa and beyond.
