Testing, Diagnosis and Staging


Not all carcinoid tumors of the gastrointestinal tract produce symptoms. In fact, about 50% of patients with carcinoid tumors will have symptoms. The most common symptom is abdominal pain caused because the bowel is kinked or blocked. Bleeding in the bowel is a rare occurrence.

In 10% of gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors, the patient will have symptoms of "Carcinoid Syndrome.

Those symptoms include:

  • Severe diarrhea
  • Facial flushing and sweating
  • Wheezing, like someone with asthma
  • Fast heart beat
