Where Can I Get Help Coping With My Feelings?

A diagnosis of cancer and the need to have chemotherapy can be overwhelming. Many patients find that family and friends can be a great source of comfort and support. Others find help at their church or synagogue. Some communities have support groups for cancer patients, and we can help you find these groups in your community. Support groups are available at the Clinical Cancer Center Clinic in Iowa City, and patients can attend these meetings if they live in the area or when they come to Iowa City for appointments. The Cancer Center has also developed an online support group to help patients and families cope with their feelings about cancer (See Patient support and resources). Please ask your nurse, doctor or social worker about support groups if you think they would be helpful. Counseling is also available on an individual basis with a social worker, psychiatric nurse or doctor, or a counselor.
