Testing, Diagnosis and Staging

Kaposi’s sarcoma can affect the skin, and/or the mucous membranes of the mouth, or the internal organs, such as the stomach. The location of the Kaposi’s lesions dictate what symptoms the patient will have. If the lesion or sore is on the skin, it will be red to brown to purple. The sores are flat and painless. If the mouth has Kaposi’s lesions they usually are seen on the roof of the mouth and are purple in color. If there are Kaposi’s lesions in the stomach there may be abdominal discomfort, stomach bleeding and possibly blockage of the stomach.
