Cancer that starts in the liver is called primary liver cancer , hepatocellular carcinoma, or hepatoma. The liver is the largest internal organ. It lies on the right side of the body just below the right lung. Liver cancer is probably the most common cancer in the world as a whole, especially in Africa and Asia. In the United States, the number of cases is increasing because liver cancer can develop in people infected with the hepatitis C virus.
