Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that affects the inside lining of the chest and abdomen. Most people who develop mesothelioma have had exposure to asbestos, usually many years before. Typical symptoms of mesothelioma are chest pain and shortness of breath. People with a history of asbestos exposure should seek medical attention if they develop chest pain or shortness of breath.

The treatment of mesothelioma depends upon how advanced it is. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, including very recently approved medications, are all used, although cure, in the presence of advanced disease, is rare.
