Testing, Diagnosis and Staging
The symptoms of metastatic cancer will depend on where the cancer has spread. Pain is often seen in metastatic cancer. Tiredness is also a frequent problem. Some examples of metastatic symptoms are:
- Brain metastases may cause headaches, visual problems, balance problems, weakness of one side of the body;
- Bone metastases can cause pain in the area. Other times the first sign of a problem is when a bone breaks with a minor injury.
- Lung metastases can cause a cough, chest pain or shortness of breath.
- Liver metastases are sometimes first noted by a change in the color of the eyes and skin (jaundice). Loss of appetite and abdominal bloating are other signs of liver metastasis.
