Multiple myeloma is a cancer of the bone marrow. It is treated with chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation and sometimes radiation. Life can be prolonged and symptoms relieved, but it is not often cured. Bone hardening agents are routinely given to decrease the chance of bone fractures and pain. Patients are unusually susceptible to infection so antibiotics are often necessary.
