The myelodysplastic syndromes are a heterogeneous group of bone marrow diseases, the site where blood celss are made. They usually occur in older people. They are characterized by low blood counts and often infections and bleeding. Their seriousness depends upon the type of myelodyspastic syndrome, degree of blood count involvement, and whether they transform to acute leukemia, as some do.
