The University of Iowa Pain Management and Support Group
Program offers consultative, interventional, and educational
support to patients and specialists in The John and Mary
Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center. The group is composed of
oncologists, anesthesiologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons,
pharmacologists, and nurses specialized in the oncological
and psychiatric fields. In addition, physical therapists and
social workers assist patients in the Clinical Cancer
Center.
The staff members with training and experience in pain
management serve cancer patients and provide
multidisciplinary assistance to patients identified by
primary physicians as requiring additional consideration and
treatment. All the subspecialties operating in The John and
Mary Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center may refer patients
with cancer treatment-related pain for multidisciplinary
pain assessment.
The assessment, treatment modifications, and supportive
care are given to patients while they are in the clinics.
Recommendations are then made to the UI Hospitals and Clinics primary physician
and/or the patient's community physician.
Services
Pharmacological modifications and alternate methods of
therapeutic intervention help patients with pain management.
Neuroaugmentative pain treatment methods, including
implantation of neuroaxial narcotic pumps, are examples of
advanced concepts for managing pain. Anesthetic nerve blocks
using local anesthetic and neurolytic solutions, social
assessment, psychiatric and psychological assessments,
counseling, coping methods, and physical approaches to pain
management are valuable to patients in the Clinical Cancer
Center.
