Awareness, Prevention, and Early Detection

Most men and women can lower their cancer risk by choosing to live a healthy lifestyle and by working with their doctor so that if they do develop cancer, it is found early.

Cancer Prevention: What You Need to Know

Can parathyroid cancer be prevented?
The causes of parathyroid cancer are not known. There is evidence that parathyroid cancer has an increased incidence after exposure to low dose radiation therapy. It is also seen in families with familial hyperparathyroidism or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1). There are no other known risk factors.

Screening for parathyroid cancer
Because it is so rare, screening for parathyroid cancer is not usually done. The tests that are done to look for parathyroid cancer are blood calcium levels and examining the area of the neck, near the thyroid to feel for suspicious lumps.
