University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Social Service has a multi-language interpreter and translation service. Interpreters are available to assist those who have a limited knowledge of English or who have a hearing impairment.
Interpreters are specially trained to assist whenever you need to communicate with hospital personnel. They can help with:
- making an appointment
- consultations
- interpretation with health professionals in charge of your medical care
- interpretation for you, if you are an inpatient
- foreign-language reading materials and music tapes
Interpreters provide both oral and written translation services in 26 languages. All staff interpreters are fluent in languages, are aware of cultural traditions, and are familiar with medical terminology. Be assured that any information you give any interpreter will be treated as confidential.
Interpreters are available between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm weekdays. They are also available for emergencies, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
