All principal investigators of cancer clinical trials at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center are required to submit a Data and Safety Monitoring Plan that will be reviewed and approved by the DSMC. Final approval of the study and release of the stamped consenting documents to the PI occurs only when the DSMC, PRMC, and IRB (and other appropriate reviewing bodies) have given their respective approvals and the PI has satisfactorily addressed the critique of all groups.
The Data and Safety Monitoring Committee has a separate and distinct function from the PRMC or IRB. Its primary tasks are to:
- prospectively screen all patients entering HCCC investigator-initiated trials for trial-specified eligibility,
- review accrual to these trials,
- assess safety by reviewing all severe adverse events and ensure timely and appropriate reporting to oversight agencies (e.g. NCI, FDA)
- review audits of selected trials
- conduct audits for data veracity.
