Population Science Research

The mission of population science is to reduce the risk, incidence, and deaths from cancer as well as enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors. Through its shared resource (Population Data Research Core), and other activities at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, Population Science fosters new research projects and collaborations of clinical, basic, and population scientists to further individual and population health. Genetic, epidemiologic, behavioral, applied, and surveillance cancer research are typical activities of population science researchers.

Natalie Denburg
Natalie Denburg, PhD

Record linkage is a powerful tool that is used often in the field of population science. Natalie Denburg, PhD, has used this tool to explore the long-term cognitive consequences of a cancer diagnosis. By linking data from the Benton Neuropsychology Laboratory to data from the Iowa Cancer Registry, Denburg was able to describe the kinds of cognitive impairments that are experienced by cancer survivors.
