About Nursing at
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center


The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center includes five inpatient units with a total of 107 beds within University Hospital with approximately 830 beds and three outpatient clinics plus full pediatric oncology services.

Full and part-time positions are currently available on the following areas:

Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant offering autologous, matched unrelated and allogeneic transplants. The Transplant program is FAHCT accredited.
Hematology/Oncology and Palliative Care
Medical/Surgical Oncology
Thoracic Oncology/Gynecologic Oncology
Head and Neck Oncology as part of an otolaryngology program ranked second in the nation by U.S. News Best Hospitals 2001.
Cancer Center Clinic
A multidisciplinary clinic providing outpatient care for adults Living with cancer. Minor surgical procedures performed and an infusional area to serve those receiving outpatient chemotherapy or other intravenous needs.

Radiation Oncology Clinic
Offers outpatient care for adult and pediatric patients receiving radiation therapy.

Otolaryngology Clinic
Offers state of the art diagnosis and treatment of head and neck oncology patients with video nasopharyngoscopy/laryngoscopy. The multidisciplinary care coordination involving doctors, nurses, radiation oncologists, speech pathologists, dentists, originates in the clinic setting with weekly "Tumor Board".

Pediatric Services
Both pediatric inpatient units provide a multidisciplinary team approach to care focusing on the unique needs of children and their families. Parents are key members of the health care team and participate in planning care for their child. These units offer state of the art equipment and services for children and families including accommodations for patients to stay in the patent's room.

Pediatric Specialty Clinic
Pediatric multidisciplinary clinic provides outpatient services to pediatric hematology, medical and surgical oncology, and bone marrow transplant patients. The clinic provides outpatient chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and other infusions. Patients undergoing both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures receive pediatric specific pharmacological and nonpharmacological pain interventions.

Pediatric medical surgical inpatient unit specializing in the care of infants and children with blood and solid organ cancers.
Pediatric bone marrow transplant unit specializes in the care of infants and children undergoing autologous, allogeneic, and peripheral stem cell transplants.

Practice in a tertiary health care setting where you can enhance your clinical skills. The Cancer Center supports professional development including support to attend national and local specialty related conferences and support for certification. We offer competitive salaries and benefits including insurance programs, a generous retirement plan, tuition reimbursement, flexible scheduling, weekend options, and shift differentials.

The Cancer Center prides itself on a truly interdisciplinary and holistic approach to care with weekly multidisciplinary patient care conferences on the in-patient units, and weekly tumor boards. In addition to the medical staff, care delivery systems include staff nurses, care coordinators, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, unit based pharmacists, social workers, and dietitians. Support and resources available to patients include rehabilitation therapies (activity therapy, music therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy) interpreter services, speech therapy, and spiritual services. Multiple support groups and patient and community programs are available to patients and families throughout the year. In 2000, there were over 36,000 outpatient visits and 3,000 admissions to the Cancer Center.

Iowa City offers a small community feel with cosmopolitan opportunities including diverse cultures, lively downtown shops and restaurants, Big 10 sporting events, Broadway plays and other nationally acclaimed events at Hancher Auditorium on the University of Iowa Campus.
