Holden receives national Outstanding Achievement Award from the Program Review Subcommittee of the Commission on Cancer (C0C) for providing superior care to patients and families.
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Iowa works with the Iowa Consortium for Comprehensive Cancer Control, the American Cancer Society, Iowa Department of Public Health and the Lance Armstrong Foundation to provide housing, transportation and medical assistance to cancer patients devastated by the floods and tornadoes in Iowa through the “High Ground for Cancer Patients” program being managed by the HCCC.

Holden receives Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) grant to support the Iowa Communications Network (ICN) to link cancer specialists at Holden with communities Iowa. Project is titled “Cancer Survivorship: Ask the Experts.”
2006 Cancer Information Service Celebrates 20 Years of Service.
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center participates in Senate Field Hearing on cancer research with U.S. Senators Tom Harkin and John Kerry, and Lance Armstrong.
2005 National Cancer Institute Renews Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center as a NCI designated Cancer Center - one of 39 in the country.
2004 Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center works with many organizations and individuals across Iowa on the Iowa Consortium for Comprehensive Cancer Control (ICCCC). Consortium launches website providing free, comprehensive information and links for Iowans as well as other statewide cancer control measures.
2002 Completion of the Roland and Ruby Holden Cancer Research Laboratories in the new Medical Education and Biomedical Research Facility.
Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center receives its first SPORE (Specialized Program of Research Excellence) grant from the National Cancer Institute for Lymphoma research.
2000 The NCI conducted a site visit of the cancer center on January 20. The NCI conferred "NCI-Designated Cancer Center" status in July.
The Cancer Center received a landmark $25 million gift from four generations of the Holden family of Williamsburg, Iowa, and is renamed the Holden Cancer Center.
Holden Cancer Center achieved highest level of recognition Comprehensive status given by the NCI and is renamed the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
1999 The cancer center submitted a cancer center support grant application to the NCI.
1998 George J. Weiner, MD, appointed as director of the cancer center.

University of Iowa President Mary Sue Coleman, UI College of Medicine Dean Robert P. Kelch, MD and R. Edward Howell, Director and CEO of UI Hospitals and Clinics, all recently appointed, reinforce institutional commitments to support and strengthen the cancer center.
1994
The NCI provided funds for restructuring the cancer center through a cancer center-planning grant. This effort was lead by Richard G. Lynch, MD.
Robert B. Wallace, MD, appointed as director of the cancer center, and established much of the current research program and core resource structure. 1993 With the support of a generous gift from the Pappajohn family of Des Moines, the John and Mary Pappajohn Clinical Cancer Center opened, providing a multi-disciplinary approach to state-of-the-art patient care. This effort was coordinated by Richard D. Williams, MD.
1988
University of Iowa, University of Iowa College of Medicine and University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics leaders developed plans for expanded laboratory research initiatives and construction of new clinical care facilities.
1987 The Cancer Information Service opened.
1981 The Cancer Center received a three-year Cancer Center Support Grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The grant was not renewed.
1980
The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, established The University of Iowa Cancer Center by conferring upon it a special "Center Designation" and appointed Richard L. DeGowin, MD, as the Center's first director.
