AUTISM: Children between the ages of 3 and 7 who have been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder are invited to participate in a study to study how children with autism learn words. The studny will include participating in games designed to assess word learning and tests of vocabulary knowledge. BONE STRENGTH: Improving Bone Strength In Children Treated with Risperidone: A UI Health Care study is inviting boys ages 5 to 17 years old treated with Risperidone for one year or more. Volunteers would participate in a research project investigating whether calcium and vitamin D improve bone strength. The researchers hope to learn whether this treatment can be effective in cases where a child treated with Risperidone develops a certain hormonal abnormality. Volunteers undergo blood and x-ray tests, complete questionnaires, and take calcium and vitamin D for nine months. Compensation and mileage reimbursement are available. CHILD LANGUAGE: Children age 18 months to 42 months are invited to participate in a research study investigating how children learn to name
new objects. Children will learn new words in a play setting and will be tested to assess their language skills. Three visits of

DIGITAL PHOTOSCREENING: Children between the ages of ages 2 and 11 who can identify their letters and who wear glasses are invited to participate in a study to determine the effectiveness of a digital photoscreening camera in eye exams. Participation involves one visit. Children will receive a free comprehensive dilated eye exam. For details, contact Angela at 356-2859.

EXECUTIVE FUNCTION: Children ages 6.5 to 12.5 years are invited to participate in a research study examining word learning and executive function abilities. Participants will be asked to complete a computer game where they will learn new words. Then they will be given several short standarized tests examining language and executive function abilities. GRAMMER ACQUISITION: English speaking children between the ages of 4 and 6 are invited to participate in a research study examining grammar acquisition. Two visits of one hour each. HPV VACCINE TRIAL: Healthy, non-pregnant women abetween the ages of 16 and 26 who have never had a abnormal pap smear, have NOT already received Gardasil and agree to use acceptable birth control through month seven of the study are invited to participate in the UI Vaccine Trial Research and Educaiton office 42-month study to determine which vaccine will better prevent Human Papillomavirus (HPV) by comparing the FDA approved vaccine (Gardasil) to an investigational vaccine. SOCIAL CUES: Children between the ages of ages 2 years, 6 months to 6 years, 11 months are invited to participate in a research study examining how children use social cues such as looking at or touching an object to learn words. During the study, children will learn names for unfamiliar objects. They will also participate in a battery of speech, language, and listening tasks. The study involves one to two visits for approximately 90 minutes at the Department of Otolaryngology on the UI campus or a mutually agreeable location. WORD LEARNING: Children between the ages of 1 to 7 are invited to participate in tests of current vocabulary knowledge and games designed to assess word learning. ABDOMINAL ULTRASOUND EXAMINATION: Healthy adult men and women are invitedto participate in a project assessing the effect of bowel prep on the quality of the abdominal ultrasound examination. ASTHMA: People between 12 and 75 years of age who have been diagnosed with allergic asthma, have a history of asthma exacerbations, and are on inhaled corticosteroids with or without other controller asthma medications are invited to participate in a 28-week study to determine the effect of an investigational drug on asthma exacerbations and the safety of this investigational drug for allergic asthmatics who have good lung capacity, but who are not adequately controlled with inhaled corticosteroids. BLOOD PRESSURE/BLOOD VESSEL FUNCTION: Volunteers ages 18 to 60 who are overweight with high blood pressure are invited to participate in a research study on blood pressure and blood vessel function. BLOOD VESSEL FUNCTION: Healthy volunteers age 18 to 50 who do not smoke, are not pregnant, and have no history of heart problems are invited to participate in a study on the effects of albuterol on blood vessel function. BRAIN ACTIVITY: Men between the ages of 18 an 55 with no history of psychiatric disorder are invited to participate in a study of electrical activity in the brain using electroencephalography (EEG). BRAIN/COGNITIVE FUNCTION: Male adults, 50 to 80 years old, with no history of neurological disease, are invited to participate in a Department of Neurology research study of cognitive function. BRAIN/COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE: Individuals between the ages of 18 and 85 who have undergone a life-threatening or life-changing medical condition such as heart attack or cancer are invited to participate in a cognitive neuroscience study. Participants must be free of any neurological conditions (stroke, head trauma). The study will consist of completing a questionnaire and will take 30 minutes to an hour. Compensation available. BRAIN/DEPRESSION: Men and women with a history of depression, along with their family members, are invited to participate in a depression study to identify genes that may predispose individuals to develop depression and may ultimately lead to improved methods of diagnosis and treatment for this disorder. BRAIN/DEPRESSION: Volunteers between the ages of 50 and 90 whose symptoms of depression began after the age of 50 are invited to participate in a research project studying the emotions of persons with a history of depression. BRAIN/MOOD DISORDER: Volunteers over the age of 18 who have been diagnosed with a mood or affective disorder may be eligible to enroll in The Mood and Affect Research Registry (MAR). BREATHING/LUNG DISEASE: Current and former smokers ages 45 to 80 who are non-Hispanic, white, or African-American are invited to participate in a lung disease study to look for genetic differences and learn why some smokers develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and others do not. CARDIOVASCUAR/HEART ATTACK AND STROKE PREVENTION STUDY: People at least 18 years old who have had a heart attack or heart surgery are invited to partaicipate in the UI Lipid Research Clinic research study sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline to learn whether the use of an investigational medication can prevent heart attacks or strokes in people with heart disease. The study will test the safety and effectiveness of this drug in preventing plaque from dislodging or rupturing in the arteries leading to the heart and brain. Partaicipants will receive laboratory evaluations, physical exams and electrocardigrams and study medication. Compensation is provided. Participants will remain on their current medications during the study and will be followed for about three years. COGNITIVE FUNCTIOIN: Volunteers age 55 to 90 with no evidence or diagnosis of coronary or peripheral vascular disease are invited to participate in a research project involving tests of cognition (the ability to think, pay attention, learn, remember, and solve problems) and
blood vessel function. Volunteers must have no more than 14 years of education or any of the following: atherosclerosis (blockage of the blood vessels), claudication, angina, previous heart attack, angioplasty, or stent placement. DIABETES/OPEN FOOT SORE: Diabetic voluteers at least 18 years of age with an open sore on the foot are invited to participate in a research study to determine if diabetic foot ulcers (that may not appear infected) might lead to infection-related complications. DRIVER WARNINGS: Drivers age 35 to 55 or 65 to 98 are invited to participate in a research study exploring which type of visual warnings are the best for alerting motor vehicle drivers of potentially dangerous driving situations. EATING BEHAVIORS STUDY: Average weight women, age 18 to 45, who currently purge to control their weight are invited to participate in research conducted by the Department of Psychology. Research explores potential psychological distinctions among eating behaviors and is designed to improve the way eating disorders are understood. GAIT ANALYSIS: Volunteers age 18 to 30 or 50 to 70 without current neurological or orthopedic problems are invited to participate in a research study that requires a two-hour visit to the Orthopedic Gait Analysis Laboratory. Electromyographic electrodes and markers will be placed on the lower limb, pelvis, and trunk while participants perform other functional activities. GAIT ANALYSIS: Volunteers between the ages of 50 and 70, who have not had joint replacement surgery and are generally in good health (both normal weight and overweight) without current neuromuscular or orthopaedic problems, are invited to participate in a UI Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation research study. The study involves one 90-minue visit to the Orthopaedic Gait Analysis Laboratory. During the visit, you will be required to wear shorts and have markers placed on your lower limbs and trunk as you walk and stand up from sitting. Compensation available. TENS: Healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 50 invited to participate in a research study at the University of Iowa examining the effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on pain. TENS is a commonly utilized treatment for pain that uses application of low intensity (non-painful) electrical stimulation to the skin. URINATION: Adults age 18 and older who have strong, sudden urges to urinate, especially at night, or have had the need to urinate frequently for three or more months are invited to participate in a University of Iowa research study to evaluate whether a new FDA approved medication approved for overactive bladder can help reduce nighttime urinary frequency and urgency. Individuals with a history of interstitial cystitis are not eligible to participate. The study involves five visits to UI Hospitals and Clinics over 16 weeks. Participants will randomly be assigned to take the active study medication or a placebo (an inactive pill). All participants are asked to keep a voiding diary.
