About the Network
The University of Iowa Critical Access Hospital Network (UI CAHN) is a consortium of ten Iowa non-profit hospitals who are affiliated with the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. The UI CAHN was created to meet and exceed State Critical Access Hospital regulations and to enhance access and provision of quality health care services in rural communities. The UI CAHN provides:
- continuity of care via transfer or referral, if needed, to an acute/tertiary care facility
- appropriate and timely communications
- credentialing
- quality assurance
The UI CAHN provides a forum for network participation in and development of best practices through education and training opportunities, peer group meetings, and effective sharing of communications and resources.
Importance of the Network
Critical Access Hospital networks enhance the financial and quality of care for member hospitals through efficient resource pooling and collaborative clinical and staffing practices. Networked hospitals:
- provide support in meeting the basic requirements and regulations of CMS
- develop forums for data collection, and the development of benchmarks and best practices
- potentially share clinical and support staff resources to ensure access to needed care in rural areas
