Autologous Blood Donation
|
Autologous blood donors donate their own blood prior to surgery. This is an option for patients who are undergoing a scheduled surgery and are otherwise healthy.
- Your surgeon will determine if you are a good candidate for this. If you are interested in donating your own blood for surgery please discuss this option with your surgeon.
- To assure blood center charges will be covered, it is suggested that you contact your insurance carrier prior to donating units of blood.
- Autologous blood can be stored for 42 days and you must complete your donations at least three days before surgery.
- All autologous blood donors must sign consent forms at the DeGowin Blood Center, however, arrangements can be made to donate your blood at a blood center nearer to your home.
- If you need to donate several units of blood your physician may advise you to take iron supplements to help your body make red blood cells.
