Medical Research, New Treatments Offer Hope

Not long ago, permanent kidney failure inevitably led to death. Today, thanks to medical research and expert medical care, new treatments offer the hope that virtually every person with kidney failure can be helped.

The University of Iowa Dialysis Service offers a wide variety of treatments for patients with kidney failure. With service centers located in five Iowa cities, outpatient dialysis as well as a home program and inpatient services are available to Eastern Iowa patients.

The home dialysis unit has been well established for more than 30 years, offering peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis, and most recently nocturnal dialysis and daily therapy with Nxstage.

The renal hypertension clinic allows patients with kidney problems to consult with a kidney specialist who will help manage the disease or prepare the patient for the need for dialysis or transplant. The clinic offers a dialysis nurse with 20-plus years of experience to provide education and management of patients who are approaching renal replacement needs.

The UI dialysis service has a strong relationship with UI Hospitals and Clinics physicians who participate in clinical trials and state of the art research related to kidney disease.
