Mertz worked as a nurses aid through high school and college. She graduated from Mt. Mercy College with a BSN degree in 1974. She worked as a staff nurse at Keokuk County Hospital, Manor House Care Center, and joined UI Hospitals and Clinics in 1990 as a dialysis nurse and an assistant nurse manager since 2005.
