The UI Eating Disorders Services was one of the first programs in the nation to offer inpatient care using cognitive behavioral therapy. (Cognitive behavioral therapy means thoughts impact feelings and feelings impact behavior and by understanding these interactions a individual can change attitudes, feelings, beliefs and behaviors.)
The staff helped develop the American Psychiatric Association guidelines for treating eating disorders which is used throughout the United States.
A complete understanding of eating disorders calls for an approach which includes numerous factors. We diagnosis and treat using a team which includes doctors, nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, recreational therapists, psychologists, dietitians, music therapists, and educational consultants.
In addition we are housed within an academic state hospital so we have immediate access to any type of medical care that might be needed.
We are available to provide any level of care that may be needed for a patient with an eating disorder. We also work with people who may not have developed an eating disorder but are occupied with these concerns to the point that adolescence and young adulthood become a burden rather than a joy.
We believe that eating disorders can be prevented by assisting individuals to deal with their issues before they develop unhealthy coping strategies.
