Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure (BBP)
UI Hospitals and Clinics Employees
The University Employee Health Clinic provides immediate evaluation and treatment of employees exposed to blood or body fluids (i.e., needle sticks). Employees with possible exposure to HIV or hepatitis are urged to seek evaluation immediately since early prophylaxis may be indicated. The Emergency Treatment Center will evaluate employees when the University Employee Health Clinic is not open; however, all follow-ups will be done by the UEHC. Refer to the Infection Control Manual, Section V.
- Post-exposure follow-up program per the protocol
Confidential medical evaluation is performed face-to-face which includes: evaluation of exposure, counseling, post-exposure medication, baseline and post-exposure lab testing, immunizations/immunoglobulin, scheduled follow-up appointments, informing person of lab results, and appropriate paperwork documentation which includes:
- First Report of Injury
The employee is required to complete the First Report of Injury form via the Employee Self Service website. Login using your HawkID and password. Under the heading Benefits, select Workers Compensation - First Report of Injury and follow the instructions. Staff benefits office will record the information on the OSHA 300 Log.
- UI Hospitals and Clinics Unusual Incident and accident report for UI Hospitals and Clinics employees only
The employee initiates this report, then the physician/nurse findings are documented, and the supervisor signs off the form. Top copy is sent to Safety and Security and bottom copy goes to their supervisor to place in the employee file.
- University Employee Health Clinic form Needlestick/Hepatitis B exposure report
The employee and University Employee Health Clinic fill out the description of the incident at their clinic visit and it is placed in their University Employee Health Clinic employee health medical record.
- Source identification and blood testing is performed if possible and risk factors/lab results shared with exposed employee. Consent for testing the source is performed by a member of the primary care physician team in accordance with hospital policy.
