2009 Seasonal Influenza Vaccinations

Since 1993, the University Employee Health Clinic has offered influenza vaccinations for staff members of all UI departments. During Fall 2008 UEHC vaccinated 9,670 hospital faculty, staff, and volunteers and 2,752 non-hospital staff members. Vaccination rate was 84% with 96% compliant rate.

For UI Hospitals and Clinics Staff, Faculty and Volunteers

As of Nov. 19, UI Health Care has received additional supplies of seasonal flu vaccine. Beginning Nov. 20, free seasonal flu vaccines will be available for all UI Health Care employees, including those not involved in direct patient care and those who do not have direct patient contact. The seasonal vaccine will be available, while the supply lasts, in the University Employee Health Clinic (1097-1 Boyd Tower) weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Employees will be required to show UI Carver College of Medicine or UI Hospitals and Clinics ID cards or badges to receive the vaccine.

For University of Iowa Faculty and Staff

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual vaccinations for high-risk individuals, which include:

  • Anyone over the age of 50
  • All health care providers
  • Residents of nursing homes and other chronic-care facilities
  • Adults who have chronic disorders of pulmonary or cardiovascular systems, including asthma and other chronic conditions such as diabetes, or kidney disease
  • Women who will be pregnancy during the influenza season
  • Those who care for persons in above categories
  • Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children aged less than 6 months
