Uterine Fibroids:
A Common Diagnosis
About one of every four American women will be diagnosed with uterine fibroids, which are benign growths in the uterus. Diagnosis is most likely to occur between the ages of 30 and 40. Even though fibroids are common, the cause remains a mystery.
However, medical research suggests a connection between estrogen levels and fibroid growth. Many women have fibroids but no symptoms. When symptoms occur, however, they commonly include:
• Changes in menstruation, including more bleeding, longer or more frequent periods, cramps, vaginal bleeding at times other than menstruation, and anemia (caused by blood loss)
• Pain or pressure in the abdomen or lower back
• Pain during intercourse
• Difficulty urinating or frequent urination, constipation, rectal pain, or abdominal cramps
• Recurrent miscarriages
The UI Fibroid Clinic is staffed by experienced gynecologists and interventional radiologists and offers a variety of services to treat the pain and other symptoms. The Fibroid Clinic offers you the security of knowing that all your options will be thoroughly evaluated and the best course of treatment recommended. |
