Online Blackboard Course

HIPAA Privacy Rule training for staff is now available through an online Blackboard course. 

Who should take this training?

This training is for staff who have not yet received HIPAA Training, and for new hourly staff.

How is credit for training received?

Staff are required to score a 9 or higher on the assessment test in order to receive credit for completing HIPAA Privacy Rule training.

What are training options for students and volunteers?

Students and volunteers should call the Joint Office for Compliance, 384-8282, to inquire about HIPAA training options.

How can staff get to this Blackboard course?

Below are the “log in” instructions.  If you have “log in” questions contact the HCIS Help Desk at Ext. 5-6500.

Logging in to Blackboard

1. Open your browser and go to http://icon.uiowa.edu/index.shtml
2. Follow the directions for Blackboard Login
3. Enter your HawkID and HawkID password.
4. You will see the MyBlackboard page, which lists any Blackboard courses you have and also displays announcements, calendar entries, and tasks for all your Blackboard courses.
5. In the My Courses box (top right), click the hyperlinked “UIHC Hospital-Wide Compliance/Competency Courseware”. You will see the Courses page.
6. Click on HIPAA Training
7. If you have trouble logging in to Blackboard, contact the ITS Help Desk at 384-HELP.

I don’t know my HawkID or Password

1. Log in to the url: http://hawkid.uiowa.edu/
2. Information about your Hawk ID and password (e.g. finding/testing your Hawk ID, resetting your password, etc.) can be found in this page.
3. Click on the lookup link and provide the requested information to look up your Hawk ID and Password.
4. You can also call 335-6500 for the HCIS (HealthCare Information Systems) Help Desk or send email to helpdesk-hcis@uiowa.edu for your HawkID and Password.

Navigating Your Blackboard Course

1. To navigate Blackboard, use the course menu on the left. Some links, like Topic information and Test/Surveys, will take you to a sublist of links.
2. You will find a lot of information about the topic under Topic Information, and surveys and/or assessments under Test/Surveys. However, it might be different for some courses.
3. The Course Map button (bottom left) can help you locate buried links.
4. To back up to the previous screen, don’t use the browser’s Back arrow. Instead, use the small navigation links that appear across the top of the page (you can think of these as “breadcrumbs”).

Taking Quizzes

1. The Assessments tool allows you to take tests or complete surveys—and view test results—online.
2. To access a test or survey, open the Test/Survey area and click on the test name.
3. Note the number of points allotted for each question (at right).
4. When you have answered all the questions, click Submit and then OK.
5. Click View Results to see how you did.
6. You must receive a score of 9 or higher to receive credit for HIPAA Training.
