Maxillofacial Prosthodontics

In its supportive role for patients with congenital or acquired oral and facial defects, the Hospital Dentistry Institute's Division of Maxillofacial Prosthetics introduces residents and pre-doctoral students to the multidisciplinary nature of oral medicine and restorative dental care in Iowa's only tertiary health care setting.

The Division of Maxillofacial Prosthetics' collaborates with physicians in:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Radiation Oncology
  • Diagnostic Radiology
  • Pathology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Dermatology
  • Neurosurgery

They also have contact with dentists from:

  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Orthodontics
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Endodontics
  • Periodontics
  • General Dentistry

Through the Division of Maxillofacial Prosthetics' association with the University of Iowa College of Dentistry's Prosthodontic Department, graduate prosthodontic residents routinely participate in the delivery of maxillofacial prosthetic services in the hospital by way of a clinical rotation during the third year of their residency program.

This rotation includes attendance at the weekly UI Health Care interdisciplinary head and neck tumor board conference and stints in the radiation oncology and otolaryngology clinics as well as the hospital's surgical suites.

In addition to supporting the prosthodontic residency, the maxillofacial prosthetic faculty closely cooperates with the oral surgery service's faculty and residents in the provision of:

  • Endosseous dental implantology
  • Management of radiation oncology patients
  • Rehabilitation of patients who have sustained maxillofacial trauma

Residents enrolled in the University of Iowa College of Dentistry's general practice residency also routinely interact consultatively with the maxillofacial prosthetic service's faculty and laboratory personnel as challenging restorative dental scenarios are encountered clinically.
