A full spectrum orthodontic practice is located in the UI Hospitals and Clinics Hospital Dentistry Institute to provide support to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Dentistry Resident Training Programs, together with the University of Iowa Craniofacial Anomalies and Cleft Palate Team.
Orthodontic treatment of early phase intervention, infant feeding appliances, distraction osteogenesis, dentofacial orthopedics, adult orthodontics, and orthognathic surgery are included in the range of clinical experiences.
Orthognathic surgery are included in the range of clinical experiences.
Severe malocclusions managed through combined and coordinated efforts of surgeon and orthodontist are presented with special emphasis placed upon communication among members of the orthodontic/surgical teams.
Residents become acquainted with orthodontic diagnostic and treatment principles and their impact on surgical treatment planning, as well as timing of cleft palate treatment and alveolar bone grafting. The orthodontist also provides an understanding of cephalometrics and the availability of spontaneous orthodontic consultation in a variety of dental treatment situations.
