Huntington disease: A team approach

Our multidisciplinary team coordinates the diagnosis, treatment, and counseling of individuals and families coping with Huntington disease. Center personnel also conduct research in an effort to better understand and treat the disease.

The team approach provides a full range of services. A routine visit allows staff to assess the three primary areas affected by Huntington disease:

  • Motor assessment—movement (chorea), posturing, rigidity, and balance are evaluated by a neurologist
  • Functional and behavioral assessment—current mood and level of day-to-day functioning is evaluated by a psychologist or social worker
  • Cognitive assessment—strengths and weaknesses in the thinking processes are evaluated by a neuropsychologist

Patients and their families will also be assessed for other health care needs such as speech therapy or genetic counseling.

In addition to conducting an initial evaluation and follow-up care, the center serves as a resource for anyone needing Huntington disease information or wishing to volunteer in Huntington disease research studies.

The Huntington's Disease Society of America supports 21 HDSA Centers of Excellence across the continental United States at locations in major hospitals and university medical centers.
