Collaborative Research at
Iowa's HDSA Center of Excellence

About Us
The University of Iowa Huntington's disease (HD) Center of Excellence serves as a caring resource and research center for people and families affected by HD. Our mission is to provide expert care, advance HD research initiatives, and educate care providers and local communities.

Jane Paulsen, PhD and Robert Rodnitzky, MD lead Iowa's multidisciplinary team and help coordinate the diagnosis, treatment, and counseling of those affected by HD. Our center personnel also conducts research in an effort to better understand and treat the disease. Accordingly, our team approach provides a full range of services. A routine visit, for example, allows our staff to assess three primary areas affected by HD:

  • Motor Assessment: movement (chorea), posturing, rigidity, and balance are evaluated by a neurologist
  • Functional and Behavioral Assessment: current mood and level of day-to-day functioning is evaluated by a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker
  • Cognitive Assessment: strengths and weaknesses in cognitive processes are evaluated by a neuropsychologist

Patients and their families are also assessed for additional health care needs such as speech therapy or genetic counseling. Additionally, the center serves as a resource for anyone needing HD information or wishing to volunteer in our research studies.
