Principal Investigator: Dr. Leigh Beglinger

Study Description:  Delirium is a change in mental status that sometimes occurs in patients with cancer. Currently, the physiology of delirium is not well understood. It is hoped that if the mechanism of delirium is better understood, there is potential for better management of delirium through early detections and perhaps intervention.

Who May Participate?

People, between 45 and 75 years of age, who are:

  • Scheduled to undergo a bone marrow transplant at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

                                             - OR -

  • Healthy individuals with no significant memory problems

What is Involved?

  • The study involves:  repeated pencil and paper thinking tests and a Chemical Shift Imaging (CSI) scan from each participant. The visits will occur on 5 occasions over the course of approximately four weeks.  The baseline visit lasts approximately 1-2 hours to complete.  The repeated visits last about 30 minutes each and the CSI/MRI scan takes 1 hour to complete.  Compensation is provided.
